The Vought Corsair was one of the most unusual but also most successful Navy aircraft of World War II. Feared by the Japanese enemy, who gave her the nickname Whispering Death, she fought her way through the Pacific skies from 1943 to 1945 and achieved record-breaking successes: 2,140 enemy aircraft were destroyed with 189 losses. The Corsair's concentrated firepower consisted of six 12.7 mm Browning machine guns. Her characteristically bent wings gave her a high recognition among the ground forces, which she called Sweetheart of Okinawa. The F4U-1A was the first batch with major changes, top speed 671km/h.
